Gündogan and Haaland help City to victory over Everton

Manchester City took another step closer to the Premier League title after a comprehensive 0-3 victory against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday. City were dominant from the start, with Ilkay Gündogan showing his class once again. The midfielder scored two goals to follow up his double against Leeds last weekend, with the first a stunning piece of ingenuity that deflated Everton in their fight to avoid relegation. Gündogan then set up Erling Haaland’s 52nd goal in all competitions this season before polishing an outstanding performance with a beautiful free-kick beyond Jordan Pickford. The victory leaves City needing six points from three games to seal the title.

Everton’s manager, Sean Dyche, was forced to withdraw his one quality striking option, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, at half-time because of a groin problem. He said that it would have been a harder call if it were still 0-0 rather than 2-0, which was the score at the time. Everton were given a rousing reception by their supporters after the final whistle, who recognised both the gulf in quality between the two sides and the importance of their upcoming game against Wolves in the fight against relegation.

Although City dominated possession as usual, Dyche’s team held the league leaders at bay with the same defensive commitment and well-planned threat on the counterattack that had devastated Brighton on Monday. However, Gündogan took the game away from Everton with a moment of brilliance in the 84th minute, when he hooked a stunning finish over his shoulder and past Pickford, leaving the home fans stunned.

This win takes City a step closer to their third successive Premier League title, with a tough match against Chelsea up next. Meanwhile, Everton will be looking to bounce back when they face Wolves in their fight to avoid relegation.
