Varane Header Secures Scrappy Man United Win Over Impressive Wolves
Manchester United earned a fortunate 1-0 win against Wolves in their Premier League opener thanks to a late header from Raphael Varane.
In new manager Erik ten Hag’s first competitive game, United struggled to create chances for most of the match against a lively Wolves side. The visitors looked the better team for long stretches under interim boss Gary O’Neil.
The game’s only goal came in the 76th minute when Bruno Fernandes found Aaron Wan-Bissaka with a superb pass in the box. Wan-Bissaka calmly headed the ball across goal where Varane rose highest to nod in from close range.
Wolves were left ruing missed opportunities, especially a first-half chance for Matheus Cunha who hit the post from close range. Pedro Neto and substitute Fabio Silva also went close as Wolves pressed for an equalizer.
Late on, Wolves were furious not to be awarded a penalty when United keeper Andre Onana collided with an opponent after coming for a cross he failed to reach.
While fortunate to claim victory, United showed grit to grind out the win despite an underwhelming attacking display. Big summer signing Antony was quiet on debut while Marcus Rashford struggled as the lone striker.
The scrappy win provides a positive start for Ten Hag’s United reign. But there is clearly much room for improvement based on this performance against an impressive Wolves side unlucky not to earn a point.
