After years of instability between the sticks, Manchester United moved swiftly this summer to sign Andre Onana from Ajax as their new number one goalkeeper. Still only 26, the Cameroonian has arrived with massive potential to finally solve United’s goalkeeping woes.
Onana originally rose to prominence with Ajax, where he won a league title and established himself as one of the most promising young shot-stoppers in Europe. Quick, agile and an excellent shot-stopper, Onana possesses all the attributes required of a modern keeper.
However, his Ajax career was derailed when he was handed a nine-month doping ban last season. That suspension meant he lost his starting spot and spent a year on the sidelines. But United have given him a second chance in the Premier League under new manager Erik ten Hag.
Early signs are encouraging. Onana has already shown his reflexes and comfort playing out from the back in preseason. His ability on the ball should allow United to build attacks from deep within their own half.
While some question whether he can adapt quickly after a year away, United are banking on Onana’s talent shining through. If he can replicate his Ajax form at Old Trafford, United may finally have the world-class goalkeeper they have searched for since David Degehas departure.
